Automotive Technology

Grade Level:       11-12

Elective:               3 trimesters - 1 1/2 credits

Prerequisites:    None

Automotive Technology introduces and prepares students to explore or enter the automotive field.  It provides a “head to hands-on” approach that will lead to success in post-secondary training or an expanding automotive-related field.  Students involved in this program may range from technician trainees to pre-engineering students.  Some of the instructional areas are braking systems, front-end alignment, suspension, on-board computers, sensors, fuel injection, oscilloscope, engine analysis and related support systems.  The Automotive Technology program is nationally certified by NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation) and is taught by an ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certified instructor.  Students will be given the opportunity to take state and national (ASE) certification tests.

Health Careers

Grade Level:       11-12

Elective:               3 trimesters - 1 1/2 credits

Prerequisites:    None

The Health Careers program provides students with the medical theory foundation, basic health care skills and experience necessary to establish a career in the health care profession.  It also provides the student with a combination of classroom instruction and clinical experience.  Health career exploration is accomplished through student research, field trips, job shadowing and internships in health care environments.  Health Careers studies include basic health occupation skills and procedures, American Red Cross basic cardiac life support (infant, child, adult), basic anatomy, medical terminology, nursing mathematics and career exploration.  Clinical experience is done in local health care facilities and offices.

Nursing Assistant

Grade Level:       11-12

Elective:               3 trimesters - 1 1/2 credits

Prerequisites:    None

Nursing/Nursing Assistant studies include anatomy, medical terminology, and nursing mathematics.  Clinical experience is done in nursing homes and hospitals.  Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the state certification exam and have their name placed on the state registry to obtain employment as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).  Course content includes medical ethics, asepsis, communication, vital signs, nutrition, safety, emergency procedures, body structure, personal care and comfort, rehabilitation, and transporting/transferring/ambulating/positioning.

Computer Aided Drafting & Design (CADD)

Grade Level:       10-12

Elective:               3 trimesters - 1 1/2 credits

Prerequisites:    None

This program teaches students the basic fundamentals of drafting standards.  Students can study Mechanical Drafting/Manufacturing or Architectural Drafting and Design and will learn basic entry level drafting standards and skills required for that field.  Students will gain experience using the software AutoCadd while constructing real-world working models.  Sketching, geometric construction methods, dimensioning, multi-view drawing layout and much more is taught on the computer.

Study Skills/Life Skills

Grade Level:       7

Required:            1 trimester

Prerequisites:    None

The first half of this class involves organizational skills, time management skills, following directions, test taking strategies, note taking skills, communication skills, and social skills.  The second half of this class will involve reading comprehension strategies that include making connections, visualizing, personal learning style inventories, questioning, making predictions and others.  If time allows, we will use simple recipes in the kitchen as an application of following directions.

Careers/Culinary Skills

Grade Level:       8

Required:            1 trimester

Prerequisites:    None

The first part of this class will be introducing entry level career information to students as well as college career choices.  A written and oral report of two selected careers is required.  The second part of this class will be consumer science/home economics where students will participate in shopping, budgeting, planning, and preparing breakfasts, lunches, dinners, appetizers and desserts.  Grading will be done on preparation, teamwork, quizzes on information introduced in the kitchen lessons and completion of a cookbook with all recipes used in the class.

Introductory Foods for Life

Grade Level:       9-12

Elective:               1 trimester - 1/2 credit

Prerequisites:    None

Students will learn to plan, puchase, and prepare nutritional foods using a variety of kitchen equipment and cooking methods.  Topics include: kitchen safety, sanitation, baking, decorating, cooking, meat cutting, table-setting, product label interpretation and more.

General Art

Grade Level:       9-12

Elective:               1 trimester - 1/2 credit

Prerequisites:    None

General Art classes focus on the exploration of art.  Creative work is centered on the elements and principles of design.  A variety of different art media will be used throughout the trimester including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculptures, and ceramics.  Some time will be spent looking into various artists, their work, and their lives.  Sketchbooks will be required for this class.

Graphic Design

Grade Level:       10-12

Elective:               2 trimesters - 1 credit

Prerequisites:    None

In Graphic Design, students will gain experience in the layout and design of a variety of products using graphics software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and other related publishing programs.  Students will learn the citeria for good layout, including how to use the elements and priciples of design when creating one.  This course provides students with a foundation in graphic design, advertising design, typography, communication design basics, two-dimensional design, color, and learning to think visually.

Work Study

Grade Level:       11-12

Elective:               3 trimesters - 1 1/2 credits

Prerequisites:    None

Work Study is a job placement for students who would like to experience real world application.  Students will be placed at a work site directly related to one of the courses they are currently taking or have taken, and a written training plan between the school, parent and employer will be developed.  Both the student and the employer must understand that the job forms an integral part of the student learner’s educational process.  Once students are placed on the job, they must work an average of 10 hours per week and carry a minimum class load of five credits per day.

Odysseyware Online Education

Grade Level:       9-12

Prerequisites:    None

Odysseyware is an online educational curriculum that offers a variety of course offerings to students.  It is used primarily for credit recovery for high school students, as well as supplemental electives for classes that Dollar Bay does not offer.  Odysseyware includes courses in the core subjects of social studies and history, math, language arts, and science, as well as a variety of electives.  It is available at no cost to our students.
