Junior Band

Grade Level:       6-7

Elective:               3 trimesters

Prerequisites:    Permission of Instructor

Students will study various musical styles, elements of music, articulation and further development of embouchure.  Emphasis will be on tone quality, dynamics, expression, and rhythm.  Seventh grade has the option to participate in Solo & Ensemble.  Participation in Marching Band is required during the summer.  Absences will be excused for out of town vacations and illnesses.  Fundraising is part of the ensemble for our band trip, which occurs every three years.  Participation in the band trip is not required.

Senior Band

Grade Level:        8-12

Elective:                3 trimesters - 1 1/2 credits

Prerequisites:     Permission of Instructor

In Senior Band, students will study various composer and musical styles with three performances per school year: Halloween (with costume), Christmas and Spring.  Participation in 8th grade Solo & Ensemble is mandatory.  Participation in 9-12 grades Solo & Ensemble is voluntary.  Participation at District Band Festival is required.  The Pep Band plays at all home games, with the schedule to be given at the beginning of the school year, and participation will be included in the final grade.  Marching Band participation is required for all students from the previous school year, except graduated seniors.  Fundraising is part of this class for our band trip, which occurs every three years.  Participation in the band trip is not required.

Music 101

Grade Level:       9-12

Elective:               1 trimesters - 1/2 credit

Prerequisites:    None

Music 101 is based on three Michigan Merit Curriculum standards: perform, reflect and create.  This class incorporates several components of the music field.  The class begins with basic piano, music theory and basic guitar.  The course then moves into music technology, recording, performing, songwriting, study of voice and music history.

Middle School Physical Education

Grade Level:      7 & 8

This course will include learning skills and rules pertaining to many activities, both team and individual, that include but are not limited to: volleyball, soccer, softball, football, badminton, ice skating, and basketball.  Students will also do physical fitness testing and an introduction to the weight room, learning the major muscles pertaining to flexibility and strength.  Students will learn why physical fitness helps lead to a healthy lifestyle.  Students will learn about the importance of communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.  Students will hear guest speakers on various health and fitness topics.

Health and Fitness

Grade Level:        9

Required:             2 trimesters - 1 credit

Prerequisites:     None

This is a year long course which combines physical education and health concepts.  Students will learn about health-related topics in a classroom setting using textbooks and projects.  Students will learn about materials that will help lead them to healthier habits.  Students will learn information in the following areas: social and emotional health, physical health, drug use, disease prevention, and safety.  Students will hear guest speakers on various health and fitness topics.  Students will participate in individual and team sports related to fitness and learn how physical activities can lead to a healthy lifestyle.  Students will participate in the following, which include but are not limited to: physical fitness testing, basketball, badminton, bowling, softball, soccer, weight training and exercise, archery, volleyball, pickleball, golf, and ice skating.  Students will learn about different opportunities in the community to maintain and keep a healthy lifestyle.

Advanced Physical Education

Grade Level:       10-12

Elective:               1 trimester - 1 credit

Prerequisites:    Health and Fitness recommended

This is a trimester course but may be repeated if the student desires.  Students participate in a variety of lifetime individual and team sports related to fitness.  Activities include the following but are not limited to: archery, bowling, fitness testing, cross-country skiing, soccer, badminton, pickleball, golf, basketball, softball, disc golf, ice skating/hockey.  Students will learn about different opportunities in the community to maintain and keep a healthy lifestyle.

Weight and Cardio Training

Grade Level:       10-12

Elective:               1 trimester - 1 credit

Prerequisites:    None

Students will perform weight and resistance training, along with cardiovascular fitness workouts.  Students will design an individual workout plan which they will participate in and evaluate.
