7th Grade Shop Block

Elective:               1 trimester

This is a trimester course but may be repeated if the student desires.  Students participate in a variety of lifetime individual and team

7th Grade Shop Block is a course designed to provide introductory level shop skills.  Skills stressed are: using and reading a tape measure, stationary and hand tool identification, shop safety, and safe tool use.  Students spend much of their time using power tools to familiarize themselves with the operation of the major tools used in woodworking.  At the end of the course, students construct a small project to take home.

8th Grade Shop Block

Elective:               1 trimester

8th Grade Shop Block is a course designed to further develop a student’s ability in woodworking.  Tape measures, stationary, and hand held woodworking power tools are used to create a fairly advanced instructor-chosen project ranging from nightstands with sliding drawers to grandmother clocks.  Students are expected to safely and correctly identify and use all of the tools in the shop to develop the project with only limited help from the instructor.

Introductory Woodworking

Grade Level:       9-12

Elective:               2 trimesters - 1 credit

Prerequisites:    None

Introductory Woodworking is a course designed to promote creative thinking skills while at the same time increasing a student’s familiarity with woodworking tools and supplies.  Students are taught the basics of isometric sketching and dimensioning to create isometric-sketched blueprints of solutions to problems presented by the instructor.  Students continue to develop woodworking skills and knowledge by constructing and testing the problem solutions using many different glue joints, fasteners, and finishing techniques.  Additionally, basic woodworking joinery techniques are introduced and perfected in this course resulting in several projects the students take home.

Woodworking

Grade Level:       10-12

Elective:               2 trimesters - 1 credit

Prerequisites:    Introductory Woodworking

Woodworking is a course designed to promote a student’s woodworking abilities.  Students continue to develop woodworking skills such as advanced joinery techniques, advanced lathe use, advanced tool use, and advanced finishing techniques.  Students are expected to design and construct a project that is chosen by the student and approved by the instructor.  The projects are not required to have doors and drawers, but students are encouraged to use them whenever possible.

Advanced Woodworking

Grade Level:       11-12

Elective:               2 trimesters - 1 credit

Prerequisites:    Woodworking

Advanced Woodworking is a course designed to allow students to utilize the full range of woodworking concepts and tools.  Students are expected to construct instructor approved projects that include many advanced topics such as dovetail drawers, sliding shelving, raised panels, and other concepts and ideas that may come up during advanced project design.  Projects are expected to be fully sanded, stained, and finished before leaving the class.

Construction Technology/Applied Math

Grade Level:       10-12

Elective:               3 trimesters - 2 credits

Prerequisites:    Introductory Woodworking

Students achieve a wide variety of hands-on experiences, all related to the multi-faceted construction industry.  Experiences will be acquired through: proper use of technical vocabulary; interpretation and understanding of architectural drawings and blueprints; use of leveling and layout instruments; proper installation techniques of both concrete flat work and the laying up of masonry units; rough and finish carpentry; insulation, drywall hanging, and finishing; building codes and laws; and general construction safety.  Students have opportunities to use a wide array of power and hand tools.

Cabinetry

Grade Level:       10-12

Elective:               2 trimesters - 1 credit

Prerequisites:    Introductory Woodworking

Cabinetry is a class where students are taught the latest techniques and processes involved in the field of fine cabinetry.  Topics addressed are cabinetry terminology, cabinetry sizing, cabinetry industry standards, cabinetry design, cabinetry construction, and cabinetry uses.  This class is not an open shop setting, but rather a class designed to run much as a commercial cabinetry shop is run with students being employees, and the instructor the employer.  Students are presented with projects as a group, given a schedule, and are expected to hold to the schedule.  Students are expected to create the highest quality cabinetry possible by holding tight tolerances, high finish quality, and extreme project accuracy while at the same time staying on schedule.  This class is considered the most advanced woodworking course offered with very high expectations and requirements.
