Spanish I

Grade Level:       9-12

Elective:               2 trimesters - 1 credit

Prerequisites:    None

Spanish I is the study of Spanish and Hispanic culture and history.  Language study includes present tense verbs and limited use of tense (the verb “ir”).  Culture study includes interpersonal relationship, religion, arts, and economics.  Primary texts include “Accion” and “Mcgraw-Hill.”  Ancillary tests: Spanish language magazines (Mary Glascow) and newspapers; “Puertas;” and films.  Students study grammar and vocabulary.  They are required to use the language in both written and oral exercises daily.  By the end of the course, students must be able to write short essays on a variety of topics and to carry on short conversations over a variety of topics.  A grade of “C” or better in the first semester is required if the student wishes to take the second semester.

Spanish II

Grade Level:       10-1

Elective:               2 trimesters - 1 credit

Prerequisites:    Spanish I

Spanish II is the study of Spanish and Hispanic culture and history.  This course includes present and preterit tenses of verbs and limited use of future tense (see above).  Culture study includes the above mentioned topics.  Both tests and ancillary texts are the same as those cited above except the “Accion I” text is completed and “Accion II” is begun.  Students study grammar and vocabulary and are required to speak and write the language daily.  In addition, they must complete a project each six weeks such as translation of short poems and creation of their own poems.  By the end of the course, students must demonstrate mastery of the language through short papers written over a variety of topics and through oral presentation.

Spanish III

Grade Level:       11-12

Elective:               2 trimesters - 1 credit

Prerequisites:    Spanish II

Spanish III is the study of Spanish and Hispanic culture and history.  This course includes present, preterit, imperfect tenses and limited use of both the future and the subjunctive tenses.  The texts and ancillary texts are similar to those used in second year Spanish, but there is a greater usage of the “puertas” text, and the “Accion II” text is completed.  Students must converse daily and are required to do so using higher order thinking which demonstrates advanced language mastery.  They must also complete projects--each project is six weeks--individually and in pairs, dealing with literature and culture.

French I

Grade Level:       9-12

Elective:               2 trimesters - 1 credit

Prerequisites:    None

This course is designed to develop the audio-lingual (listening-speaking) skills in the French language through dialogs and developing conversational sequences.  Students gain oral command of vocabulary, sentence patterns, and grammar.  An appreciation of the culture of the French people is gained through the reading of simple materials.

French II

Grade Level:       10-12

Elective:               2 trimesters - 1 credit

Prerequisites:    French I

French II will continue to promote understanding and usage of the French language, understanding of the French culture and encourage an appreciation for cultural diversity.  Communication in French in the classroom is the goal for the second semester.  The primary emphasis is to speak French and be able to understand other people speaking French.
